Q: Do I have to pay royalties to record companies for playing music in my coffee shop?
I don't have a coffee shop yet, but am planning to. I read (on here, in passing) that I'd have to pay the record companies royalties to play any music... is that true? If so, how much? How does it work? Thanks.

A: If you play music in your coffee shop you will need to pay royalties to be legal. There are music provider services you can sign-up for to make the process simpler. I believe XM radio has a commercial service. You also might consider that fact that if you have one coffee shop I doubt anyone would report you. You can find out more by searching for "The American Society of Composers" or ASCAP.

Q: Coffee shop music?
Please forgive me if I'm wrong but...whenever I think of a coffee shop I think of sitting in big grand chairs (um, i guess you can think of Starbucks chairs) with a giant steaming cup of coffee looking out of the shop window watching snow fall on a winter's night. Now when I picture that atmosphere I think of a certain type/genre of music...I think of sort of jazzy-bluesy-maybe even big band style of music. If anyone knows what I'm talking about can you guys give me some song suggestions?

A: diana krall lou rawls dianne reeves harry connick, jr lonnie liston-smith keith jarrett van morrison wynton marsalis and, definitely, miles davis's 'kind of blue'... those are the ones who work best for me on those 'coffee shop' mornings...

Q: i fired 6 employees in the last 3 months ,i have a coffee shop and were doing alot of music now?
we have bands now and business is picking p but the6 employees are lying and going to the other coffee shops in town and saying mean things that were run badly what should i do?

A: If that many employees feel that way, then there are two possibilities. A. You are badly run. B. You are inadvertently doing things that give people the impression that you're badly run. If I were you, I would take a hard look at what I was doing. I would also have some frank discussions with my current employees to get their impressions. If you do this with an open mind, you may learn something important. The fact that you have fired six people in three months is a warning sign. You may be hiring the wrong kind of people or firing people when coaching and training would fix the problems. If you keep doing that, you're going to have trouble hiring. The word will get out that you fire a lot of people and well-qualifed applicants will avoid you. I formerly managed fifty people. I never fired anything close to six people in three months and I had very high expectations. If I did fire that many people, my boss would be questioning me about what I was doing wrong.
